I'm switching to Renault5 when it becomes available but right now, I drive a Clio E-Tech Hybrid in and love the automatic switching between electric and engine power. But there's a problem,! Sometimes the EV button on the dash lets me switch to electric mode, even when the car seems happy using the engine. Other times, I hit the button and get an "EV not available" message.

Is this normal? Shouldn't the car handle the switching automatically, or is there a reason I can sometimes force it electric? I was hoping Renault fans here might have an idea.

I think it's all about the battery level and the car's smart power management system. The EV button probably forces the car to use more battery power for longer periods, especially in slow traffic.

When it doesn't, it says "optimizing battery," which I think is to protect the battery.

Yes, pretty normal with hybrids! The Clio’s system will let you switch to EV mode when it determines there’s enough charge and conditions are ideal, like at lower speeds or light loads. If you get the “EV not available” message, it usually means the battery level or driving conditions aren’t right for electric-only mode at that moment. It can be a bit tricky, but the car is built to prioritize efficiency!
